2005 Bistable Intelligent Structure System

Team Zero.1 explored the Material Behavior of Bistable Structure and developed a patented material system. Through rapid internal collapse, the system possesses the capacity to deploy new design boundaries.

The spring metal is only stable in two states: when it is extended straight and when it is contracted into a coil. The research, however, connects two layer strips together. The connections provide resisting force and divide the strips into segments, therefore limiting and confining the collapse within the segments. Additionally, series of prototypes are investigated where composite materials are generated via the use of different materials.
